“Adopt a Neighbor” is a new giving opportunity this season, encouraging you to buy an item, a Christmas gift, for one of our Neighbors in Need. This would be above and beyond what our food pantry and clothes closet offer.
The tree will be in the lobby from Sunday, November 19, through December 17.
These instructions will be posted with the tree:
- Take an angel card—representing one of our neighbors in need—from the tree.
- Purchase items from the list.
- Bring items unwrapped with the angel card to the church office no later than December 19.
- Items will be given to the neighbor before Christmas Day.
You can include a note of encouragement for your adopted neighbor with the items. This is much like the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree for children in foster care. Individuals, families or groups in the church can “adopt” a neighbor and purchase items from his or her wish list found on the back of each angel card.
The hope is to bring some joy to our neighbors who are experiencing homelessness by giving them a Christmas gift, something extra at Christmas, that we can’t offer on a daily basis.
Each neighbor will have this information on his or her card to help you decide on a gift: male or female and age; favorite color; shirt, pants and belt size; shoe size; undergarment size; and favorite candy or chocolate and a non-alcoholic beverage.
In addition, each neighbor will identify one fun item that would make him or her smile, and one item needed that is not in the pantry on a regular basis. Each neighbor will be asked to list three things about himself or herself that we should know.
Plans are for every neighbor to receive a Christmas gift. Plans also may include a meal at a later date to bring together the neighbors and their adopting persons.
