Adult Elective Class

“An Atlas of the Heart” – Brené Brown series

Sunday, May 7 – 28 | 9:40-10:40 AM
Room 113

Led by Rev Harry Brown

This four-week class explores the work of Brene Brown in her book of the same title.

A New York Times bestselling author, she is a sociology professor at the University of Houston and visiting management professor at UT’s McCombs School of Business.

She uses the image of map making to explore our emotions and how they impact and shape where we have come from, where we are and where we are going. Bown freely admits that we will never fully understand our emotions, but a greater understanding of them will enable us to grow more fully into the human beings God intends us to be.

  • 1st week: Since Jesus told us the greatest commandments are to love God and neighbor, we begin our exploration by looking at love and some of the difficulties that come with loving others.
  • 2nd week—What happens when love and life go wrong and where the resulting anger leads us.
  • 3rd week—Places we go to self-assess things like pride, hubris and humility.
  • 4th week— Places we go when we are hurting; things like anguish, hopelessness, despair, sadness and grief.

Harry looks forward to sharing with us, hearing our questions and learning from our observations.
