“The Art of Seeing Others Deeply and Being Deeply Seen”

Video with Author David Brooks

7 p.m., Monday
April 15
Room 101

Brooks’ book (by the same title as this FRED Talk/video) is a practical guide to the art of truly knowing another person in order to foster deeper connections at home, at work and throughout our lives. He is also the author of The Road to Character and The Second Mountain.

Brooks says there is one skill that lies at the heart of any healthy person, family, school, community organization or society: the ability to see someone else deeply and make him or her feel seen—to accurately know another person, to let him or her feel valued, heard and understood.

And yet, humans don’t do this well—we don’t see another person deeply. All around us, people feel invisible, unseen, and misunderstood. Brooks talks about how to help us do better.

He is an Opinion columnist for The New York Times and a commentator on the “PBS NewsHour,” NPR’s “All Things Considered” and NBC’s “Meet the Press.” He also teaches at Yale University.
