The “Magnificat” is one of the most ancient of Christian hymns and is often sung or read as a part of evening prayers or vespers for several denominations. And despite its history of being one of the oldest Christian hymns, the text is still part of daily devotional use around the world.

Magnificat is a setting of the song of Mary found in the Gospel of Luke (1:46-55), what the King James Version in 1611 translated as “My Soul Doth Magnify the Lord.”

As a biblical passage, these words have been set to music by composers perhaps thousands of times over the centuries. Many, such as Bach and Vivaldi, have composed them more than once.

Michael John Trotta’s version is an uplifting work. It delivers a tapestry of melodic richness that powerfully portrays the anticipation of the wonder and mystery of the birth of a savior. The text of Trotter’s work is part of the infancy narrative in Luke, and additional texts come from the medieval period and Mary’s response at the Annunciation.
